Northern Leaders Edge Program

The Northern Leaders Edge Program

Sponsored by GM Holden, the Northern Leaders Edge program(NLE) has been designed to give managers and leaders working in Adelaide’s northern suburbs a leading edge.

Commencing in August 2017, the selected Northern Leaders Edge group will meet monthly, for confidential and structured 4.5 hour leadership development sessions facilitated by wise, experienced and highly qualified Leadership development experts.

Northern Leaders Edge will involve a group of managers and leaders from different backgrounds, it will challenge thinking, practice and understanding. The diversity of perspectives that emerge from the robust and rigorous interactions are powerful enablers for leadership development. Northern Leaders Edge will not only help to provide better solutions to current challenges, it will also develop individuals to think more broadly and strategically for the future challenges they will face.

What is this program about?

The facilitators will introduce key content and/or tools in each session, which Set members would then explore and apply to their own change challenges, planning actions and experiments for implementation in their work place. Subsequent sessions would be used to reflect upon what worked/did not work in the application of learning and allow for review and modification.

The facilitators will encourage the group to explore systems, ask different questions, take multiple perspectives and apply new skills to their change challenge. Throughout the sessions, the facilitator will keep a focus on how the leader’s personal style supports and/or inhibits their change efforts and encourage participants to reflect upon and develop their personal capabilities. The specific content for each Action Learning Set would be tailored to the needs of the group; however a suggested outline based on adaptive change concepts, and the competencies, attributes and behaviours of a contemporary change leader is outlined below.

  • Identify change triggers and the level of control the organisation has over change triggers
  • Tools and frameworks to lead in complex times
  • Roles/responsibilities/power and rank
  • Overcoming obstacles to action
  • Culture of organisation in relation to change readiness
  • Navigating change through formal systems and structures, especially collaboration
  • Keeping yourself safe in leading change

Individual reflection and development planning – MBTI reporting and change leader attributes including Millers 4 stages of change beliefs. Participants would be encouraged to keep a developmental diary.

Leading in Changing Times Action Learning Sets

The Leading in Changing Times Action Learning Sets provide a unique opportunity for leaders to develop and hone their skills in leading complex change programs within facilitated sessions, working with peers and led by an expert facilitator to learn new skills, take action through planning and experimentation and reflect upon and assess the effectiveness of their actions. The goal of action learning is to help change leaders to:

  • Make progress on a change leadership challenge
  • Reflect and develop self-awareness as a change leader
  • Identify clarity of purpose
  • Engage with peers who will challenge and support them
  • Apply tools and adaptive approaches to the leader’s own work environment
  • Build confidence and support to successfully lead complex change programs

Action Learning Sets are particularly appropriate where issues faced are complicated or complex (Cynefin model) and where there is no obvious solution.

There may be several viable solutions and multiple views about the appropriate way forward. They are particularly useful when conditions are changing or unpredictable.

In addition, they support individual leaders to:

  • Build and support a high performance culture
  • Access to innovative solutions through networking
  • Build political nous
  • Expose talented leaders to diverse industries, business units and jurisdictions
  • Learn tailored strategies that are quickly transferable to the participant’s organisation
  • Enhance leadership talent, retention and succession strategies
  • Build the leaders capability to deal with a diverse range of challenges
What is the investment?

The investment of each participant in this 5-month program (including Myers Briggs MBTI and text book) is $1600 + GST (the usual fee is $3200 but Holden is offering a 50% scholarship to subsidise the first 10 participants to join the program). Payment plans are available.
